SPF you hate ends up in the drawer with the samples you never touch. SPF you like, you apply every morning along with your moisturizer, without a second thought. The difference sits in the finish, the filter, and the texture — in what you picked before you knew what to look for.
Why daily SPF matters, not just at the beach
Four and a half years, 903 adults under 55, Australia. People who applied SPF daily showed 24% less skin aging than those who applied it "at their own discretion" (Hughes et al., Annals of Internal Medicine 2013). A beta-carotene supplement, tested in the same study, produced no protective effect.
The scale is bigger than intuition suggests. In a study of 298 women in Montpellier, UV exposure accounted for roughly 80% of visible facial aging, mostly discoloration (Flament et al., Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology 2013). Eyelid sagging came down mainly to age, not sun. But UV writes most of the rest of what you see in the mirror.
Even when you're not out in the sun. A 69-year-old delivery driver, 28 years behind the wheel: the side of his face closer to the side window had noticeably thicker, more furrowed skin than the other (Gordon and Brieva, New England Journal of Medicine 2012). UVA passes through glass. It passes through clouds too: according to dermatologist Agnieszka Bańka-Wrona, as much as 80–90% of this radiation reaches skin on an overcast day (interview, osp1.pl). It doesn't burn or leave the redness UVB does, so it's easy to assume that with no sun in the sky, SPF is optional.
How to read the label: SPF, the UVA circle, and PPD
The SPF number tells you only about UVB protection — the radiation that burns and reddens skin. Protection against UVA, the radiation that ages skin with no warning signal at all, is shown by a different mark: the letters "UVA" inside a circle.
Under the EU Commission Recommendation of 2006, this symbol can appear on packaging under one condition. The UVA protection factor (UVA-PF) has to be at least a third of the declared SPF (Recommendation 2006/647/EC). At SPF30 that's a UVA-PF of at least 10; at SPF50, around 17. Compliance is confirmed by the PPD test (Persistent Pigment Darkening) or by a critical wavelength measurement.
Look for the UVA circle next to the SPF number. Its absence doesn't always mean weaker protection. But its presence gives you a hard guarantee: the filter meets the EU standard for UVA protection.
New-generation filters: what's changing in the formula
Older UVA filters, like avobenzone, break down after about 30 minutes in the sun and lose effectiveness unless the formula includes an added stabilizer (study on avobenzone photostability, PMC). The new generation — Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M, or Uvinul A Plus — works differently: these filters are inherently photostable, broad-spectrum, and less likely to leave a white cast on skin (EU filter overview).
The same group includes two newer, but completely different molecules that are easy to mix up: Mexoryl 400 (L'Oréal, used in the Anthelios line among others) and TriAsorB (Pierre Fabre, approved by the EU's scientific committee SCCS in 2018, ingredient monograph). Both protect against "ultra-long" UVA, reaching up to 400 nm, but they're two separate, patented ingredients from two different companies — not the same filter under two names.
You'll find Mexoryl 400 in, for example, the La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+. It's a fragrance-free formula, also tested around the eye area, that goes on under makeup without any tacky feel.
Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) work differently: they reflect radiation off the skin's surface instead of absorbing it. They're not "better" or "worse" than chemical filters. They're heavier in texture and sometimes leave a white cast, but because they sit on the surface, they're less likely to irritate sensitive or reactive skin (Cleveland Clinic).
Everyday finish: how much to apply and how often
Oily and combination skin does better with a fluid or gel that mattifies. Dry skin — a lotion or a richer cream with added hydrating ingredients. Under makeup, a fluid that absorbs fast and doesn't pill under foundation works best.
For sensitive, reactive skin, look for a fully mineral, fragrance-free filter designed for reactive skin.
For a makeup routine, a lightweight water-based fluid that disappears into skin and leaves no trace under foundation works well.
How much to apply? The lab standard is 2 mg per square centimetre of skin. In practice, for the face alone, that's roughly a quarter to half a teaspoon. The "two-finger rule" calls for two strips of cream along your index and middle finger, from palm to fingertip (two-finger rule). Most people apply half that amount or less, which lowers the filter's real-world SPF, even when the label says 50.
Reapply every 2–3 hours if you're genuinely in the sun: a walk, a commute, a desk by the window. In an office, without direct sun, a modern SPF50 holds up for most of the day. A single morning application still beats no filter at all. To reapply over makeup, an SPF mist from 20–30 cm away, a mineral powder with SPF, or patting fluid on with a sponge, spot by spot, all make it easier.
SPF myths you'll hear most often
"Foundation or BB cream with SPF is enough." In theory, the filter in makeup works. In practice, nobody applies enough of it. A study comparing SPF30 sunscreen with SPF30 moisturizer found that the moisturizer missed 16.6% of the face's surface, and the plain sunscreen missed 11.1% (Lourenco et al., PLoS ONE 2019). Around the eyelids, the gap was even bigger, and 78% of people missed the corner of the eye entirely. To reach the declared SPF from foundation alone, you'd need to apply a layer several times thicker than usual.
"SPF30 and SPF50 offer almost the same protection." The numbers look close: SPF30 blocks about 97% of UVB radiation, SPF50 about 98% (American Academy of Dermatology). Flip it around, though: 3% of radiation gets through SPF30, versus 2% through SPF50. That means a third less radiation reaches your skin with SPF50. That margin matters most when you're already applying the filter in too thin a layer.
"Mineral works instantly, chemical only after 20 minutes." Technically true, with a caveat. Zinc reflects radiation right after application; chemical filters do best with 15–20 minutes to form an even layer on skin. In a normal morning routine — apply SPF, get dressed, eat breakfast — those 20 minutes pass on their own. The difference only really matters if you apply the cream right before stepping into full sun.
"SPF blocks vitamin D synthesis." The science on this is still open. An expert panel and the position of the British Association of Dermatologists indicate that SPF used under everyday conditions doesn't block vitamin D synthesis for most people. The reason is simple: nobody applies a filter in a way that eliminates 100% of UVB (British Association of Dermatologists). Newer research suggests that very consistent, long-term use of a high SPF may lower vitamin D levels, but the evidence is still mixed. If a deficiency worries you, that's a conversation for your doctor, not a decision to make based on a skincare article.
Don't go looking for the perfect year-round filter right away. Find one whose scent and finish you actually like, and put it on tomorrow morning, along with your moisturizer. The rest becomes a habit on its own.
