The cream that lasted until evening in summer can't make it past noon now. Skin tightens across the cheeks, and lips crack after two hours in the cold. You reach for sunscreen less often than in summer. Your skin hasn't changed. The climate around it has. A few spots in your routine just need adjusting before it gets truly cold.
Why the same cream stops being enough in winter
In winter, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) rises, while skin hydration and sebum drop. Independent studies from several countries confirm this. In a study of 72 women in Kunming, China, winter TEWL was clearly higher and skin hydration lower than in summer (Yang et al., Skin Research and Technology 2020). The same pattern shows up in a study of women from Central Europe - the population climatically closest to Poland (Dolečková et al., Skin Research and Technology 2021).
It's the same mechanism I wrote about in the article on the skin barrier. Low temperature and low air humidity stiffen the lipids in the stratum corneum, and the barrier loses its seal. In a heated apartment without a humidifier, air humidity can drop to 15–25%, while the range comfortable for skin is 40–60% (iaq.works). Skin dries out, then, even without ever stepping out into the cold.
The reason a winter cream needs to be richer comes down to the physics of the formula - specifically, the type of emulsion. Summer gels and fluids are usually oil-in-water emulsions - light and fast-absorbing. Winter creams are more often water-in-oil emulsions. The oil phase forms an occlusive layer on skin that limits TEWL and shields against wind (LM SKINCENTRE, emulsion formulation overview). Add a rich cream with three ceramides and cholesterol - for example, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream - on top of your usual routine in the evening. You don't need to replace your whole routine - just layer on a richer cream at night, or on days when the cold really stings.
Glycerin holds water better than hyaluronic acid when the air is dry
Humectants - substances that draw water into skin - don't work the same way in every condition. A controlled study of 17 volunteers tested a cream with 20% glycerin. It improved skin hydration and barrier function clearly more effectively than the same base without glycerin (Lodén, Wessman, International Journal of Cosmetic Science 2001). Glycerin draws in water even when air humidity is low.
In a very dry environment, hyaluronic acid can be less predictable. The theory holds that a humectant reaches for the nearest source of moisture. When the air doesn't have enough, it may reach deeper instead - into the skin itself, rather than drawing water from outside (Paula's Choice, hyaluronic acid myths). That's still more physicochemical logic than a hard result from a study on human skin. So there's no reason to give up hyaluronic acid for winter. Just apply it to damp skin and always seal it in with a cream, so it has water to draw from.
A simple rule for the season: glycerin is your year-round hydration base. Apply hyaluronic acid only under occlusion - ideally on damp skin, sealed in with a cream.
SPF doesn't take a vacation when the sun disappears
Almost half of Polish women and men who use facial SPF at all do so only in spring and summer. 46% say they apply sunscreen "only in the spring-summer season," and nearly 48% of men don't use it at all (Danae agency survey 2024, via Zdrowie naTemat). The most common reason is the belief "I don't need it" - cited by 54% of men and 39% of women.
UVA is the radiation that ages skin. It works regardless of whether you can see the sun in the sky. It penetrates clouds at 80–90% - I wrote about that in the article on daily SPF. Polish pharmacy sources make the same point about the autumn-winter season (Aptekacodzienna.pl). Snow adds a separate problem: it reflects up to 80% of UV radiation (The Skin Cancer Foundation). On a winter walk or on the slopes, the rays then reach you from above and below at once.
In winter, the same sunscreen as in summer is enough, applied just as regularly. If you have a morning habit from summer, simply carry it over into October and February.
Autumn is a good time to start acids and retinoids
Shorter days and weaker sun lower the risk of irritation and pigmentation when you introduce acids or retinol. Polish beauty press repeats this as an argument for an autumn start (Wizaz.pl; Health Labs Care). Behind it is a fact I described in the protocol for starting acids. AHAs increase skin's sun sensitivity for the entire duration of use, and for a week after stopping. In autumn, it's easier to keep to that discipline, because the sun itself gives you fewer reasons to forget your SPF.
That doesn't mean you have to back off in summer. British dermatologists note that summer's higher air humidity can be gentler on skin during retinoid use than dry, heated interiors in winter. For many people, seasonal breaks from treatment do more harm than staying consistent with SPF in place (The Tweakments Guide, 2026). Autumn, then, is a convenient starting point: it's simply easier to keep the discipline that acids and retinol require all year round anyway.
Lips and hands ask for a layer of their own
Lip skin has no sebaceous glands, so it doesn't produce its own sebum. On top of that, its stratum corneum is much thinner than on the rest of the face. That's why lips are among the first to crack when it turns cold and dry (Cleveland Clinic). An SPF 30+ lip balm protects against wind and against UV at the same time, which doesn't go away in winter. Outdoors, reapply it roughly every two hours. At night, a richer formula works well - with petrolatum or an oil. Occlusion works on lips the same way it does on cheeks.
Hands have a similar problem, except you remember them less often. Frequent washing and disinfecting in winter further strip lipids from skin. A hand cream by the sink deserves the same place in your routine as your face cream.
Windy walks and broken capillaries
Cold wind on the face triggers a physiological reaction in blood vessels. First they constrict, to limit heat loss. After a few minutes, they start alternating between dilating and constricting, even though the cold continues (Brajkovic, Ducharme, European Journal of Applied Physiology 2006). It's a natural protective reflex, not a sign of illness. In people prone to broken capillaries, repeated vessel dilation on every windy walk makes those capillaries more visible. On top of that comes "windburn" - a stinging redness after strong wind and frost, whose mechanism medicine hasn't fully pinned down. Some sources suspect the real culprit is often mild sunburn in cold, windy weather rather than the wind itself (The Skin Cancer Foundation). One more reason to bring the same sunscreen on a winter walk as you would in summer, instead of leaving it in a drawer until April.
How to fit this into the routine you already have
None of the above requires buying a whole new skincare routine from scratch. In fact, the entire industry is heading the same direction. In the US, sales of k-beauty-style products are growing fastest where it's about strengthening the barrier and simpler routines (NielsenIQ, 2025). That's US market data, not Polish, but the direction is clear. In practice, too, adaptation beats revolution here.
Start with one change at a time: a richer cream at night, SPF back on the shelf by the sink, an SPF lip balm in your jacket pocket. The rest of the routine that worked in summer can stay exactly the same.
